From the Lab to Your Skin: Dr. Potter's Algae Journey
Dr. Andrew Potter’s fascination with algae began as an undergraduate at Oklahoma State University, studying diatoms in the salt plains—a harsh, high-salinity environment.
“Seeing algae thrive under extreme conditions showed me just how adaptable and impactful these organisms can be,” he recalls.
This early curiosity led to a master’s thesis on algal taxonomy and ecology, then to work with vertical photobioreactors in El Paso—a crash course in applying algae research to real-world issues like biofuels and water treatment.
Eager to push algae’s potential even further, Dr. Potter completed his PhD at New Mexico State University, focusing on Nannochloropsis salina as a strategy to convert wastewater into valuable biomass.
“I saw firsthand how algae could transform waste streams into resources,” he says. “That conviction—that algae can solve environmental problems—kept me pushing forward.”
Skincare, however, emerged by accident. Through his consulting firm, Algae Analytics, Dr. Potter was helping businesses with Spirulina cultivation when he had leftover algae biomass. Intrigued, he experimented with skincare formulations—initially using whole Spirulina (not so luxurious) before perfecting a high-purity phycocyanin extract.
“I was amazed at the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential,” he explains. “That’s when I knew algae-based skincare wasn’t just a trend. We could make a real difference for people’s skin, ethically and backed by science.”
Still, as an academic, he hesitated to enter an industry known for hype and “snake oil.” This skepticism became a guiding principle for Algae Aura.
“I never wanted to sacrifice integrity for a sale,” he notes. Today, the company is built on purity, efficacy, and sustainability, with Dr. Potter overseeing every step of Spirulina cultivation, extraction, and formulation.
“If I can help soothe people’s skin while respecting nature,” he reflects, “then I’ve bridged my academic roots with a real-world solution I’m proud of.”
Looking ahead, Dr. Potter views algae as more than a skincare ingredient—he sees it as a catalyst for sustainable innovation.
